Naimuggery

(photos courtesy of Google) I knew this day would come. I had planned and schemed how I would get myself out, but I knew no matter how prepared I was, my reactions would be different. For one I had planned to go after the leader, plan number two, attack the subordinates then go back to wrestling with the leader and making an example for others. How wrong I was. I was coming out of class, tired. The lecturer left early so it was around 7.45 when I reached Nairobi, alighted from the bus and walked to the bus stop, unaware of my fate. As I was walking I saw a girl in a Hijab. She was always borrowing from people passing by the pavement and I had seen and helped her several times. I reached in my pocket and grabbed 30 shillings and put it in her hand. She was grateful and skipped on to the following people. I have questioned myself was it God, thanking me for my generosity? How had I escaped the knife’s edge? As I crossed the busy jam, I was being followed by three gen...

Digital Migration, a bold step for Kenya

(all pictures from google.co.ke) It is shocking, the Former President Mwai Kibaki presided over the launch of the digital migration in 2010. All media stations were present and accounted for. No one complained, no one went to court to stop the process, everyone accepted it and we as Kenyans moved forward. 3 years down the line, when the deadline is approaching three leading media stations decide to collaborate to stop the process. This comes after an international company is given the mandate to carry the digital signal. I do not know why but every court case they have gone through so far, the government and the ministry have come out on top. When their analogue signal is blocked, they take matters into their own hands and switch of their digital broadcast signals. They then say they are looking after the 'ordinary' Kenyan interests who they claim cannot afford a set up box. The funny thing they ask them to 'tweet'. So the 'ordinary' Kenyan can af...

The Normal Plan

(all photos courtesy of Google)                                    In life we always follow a plan set out, what the people in the traditional days called “circle of life”. We are born, we grow, we marry, we have children, we get old, and we die. In today’s world it is no different. The same principles apply. But what if…what if you went contrary to the circle of life and tried something different. Kali had many friends who had married, got children and jobs, but not him, no, he was different, he did not want to fit in, he wanted to be his own. He was amazed that people were always challenging him why at his age, he did not have any of the things his friends were struggling with. People hate different. They want each and every one to follow a routine. Finish college, get a job and a family. Even his parents asked him if he was OK. His younger siblings were also in on the act ready t...

Awkward feelings

It started with a feeling. I felt like something was out of sync. I was confused, but I knew something would happen.  (picture from google.com) Thursday Afternoon Cold day, well it the el-NiƱo season so of course it was going to be cold. I was not so sure I wanted to attend class that day, but seeing as how my parents are still supporting me at my age, I would feel guilty for a month. I did my assignments and prepared myself for school that is until the lecturer was unable to come for class. I was relieved, but still felt empty. Friday I woke up, late as usual (I must be the laziest person in my age) I was supposed to go to town, and as usual I was battling in my mind whether I should go or not. When I was done giving myself reasons to leave, I left the house and went to town. I had to pass through the bank because the school had found fees I had not paid and exam week was approaching. While I was on the line, the guy behind me (a youth nearly my age) was pushi...

It is not about Religion

Hassan was shocked. "What is wrong with them? Why would they do this? I thought we were friends?"  It was a Saturday evening. He had come from playing with his friends. However, Kevin came by and whispered something to the others and they immediately turned to him and chased him. He left confused and angry. "Mom, my friends chased me away and I don't know why." "Its  OK  son, maybe they were tired and wanted to go home." "No. You know we play until 6.30 pm. Kevin came in and said something and the others were pissed off." "Don't worry son, go get cleaned up and watch TV." Hassan went away murmuring, still in a fit. He got cleaned up and put on the TV. "Moooooommmmm! Mom!" "What is it?" "Come and see" "This is YTV, reports are coming in that Militants have attacked a popular mall here in Nairobi and are killing indiscriminately. The attackers came in at 1.30 pm armed with AK 47s a...

A Year On

A year has passed since that dreadful day in September. (Photos Courtesy of Google). It was around 12.30 to 12.40 when my mom and I were having lunch. It was a sunny Saturday afternoon and I was preparing myself to go visit a friend who was recovering from a surgery at M.P Shah Hospital is Westlands. I had worn a striped purple and white shirt, my skinny jeans and sneakers. We left the house and my mother drove towards M.P Shah but she thought about passing through the Westgate road. As we reached the roundabout we were stopped by police and asked to use an alternative route since they were fighting robbers along that road. We faithfully complied believing that the robbers will of course be judged and punished by our “Mboys.” As we continued on with our journey, ambulances, security cars and personal vehicles passed us. My mother avoided them. She said it could have been the thugs or the police in hot pursuit and there was always the possibility of a stray bullet. When w...

I LOVE DUBSTEP!!!

(NB: ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF GOOGLE & VIDEOS FROM YOU TUBE) The truth is I do not know why I love dubstep.  Whenever I listen to a dubstep song I want to stand up and dance. I was introduced to dubstep by a friend called Kibui. He came up to me and asked me to listen to UKF (A Dubstep recording group). It was 'love at first sound'. I could not get the song out of my head and from then on I became a huge dubstep fan. I have been listening to dubstep ever since the beginning of 2012 and I have been able to collect and listen more than 1000 dubstep songs. I created a specific folder for them. My favorite dubstep song is Crave you by Flight Facilities (Adventure's club remix). The reason I love it is because of its beats and it always uplifts me whenever am having a bad day or the lecturer has given me a tough assignment and it’s due the next day. I know some of you are wondering what is dubstep? Well I will give you the definition and a brief history. Ac...
