There are times
I say, God sends us angels to live with us. He allows them to remind us about
His majesty and splendor while demonstrating to us the type of compassion we
can all show to each other. My only problem is I always feel he gives them too
short a life. Worse still, they leave us with big holes to fill. Today, I
remember one person who has had a big influence in my life, despite the short
time we had.
I pay tribute to
Omar Ibrahim Mwangangi. A great young man who encouraged and continues to
encourage me to be better than I was yesterday. A young man who approached me
and asked me to be his mentor. Apart from being asked to be a Godfather to one
of the brightest and loveliest person ever, this was the second greatest
responsibility I was given by people who were not my family members.
The time we had,
to me was meaningful. I learnt a lot. I visited Kibra and I planted trees to
support conservationist efforts. We would talk to each other. The conversation
would always revolve around what he had planned to do and what I was doing with
my life. Despite our age differences, we learnt from each other. As I was the
older one it felt great to see such optimism and focus from a person as young
as he was. He didn’t let his background define him. He was ready to achieve his
dreams as best as he could.
Of course I am
going to say, if he had time, he would be far by now. He helped a lot of
people, especially his family. I always challenged myself when I heard about
his stories, because I felt I could be better than where I was. I was not
competing with him. No. I wanted us to grow as much as we could.
Today, I
celebrate the anniversary of the day God called him back. I definitely miss
him, but I believe the best way I can honor him is by moving forward and
working on my dream. He can watch over me and pray for me to overcome the
challenges I go through on a daily basis.
Keep resting in
power my mentee.
