Kevin
remembers that one day he came home. He was feeling sick and was scared of what
might happen next. He had borrowed his father's car to go visit a friend and
while coming back it got a dent. The problem was he knew how much his father
loved the car and was afraid of the consequences that may arise.
"Maybe
he will think I did it on purpose; he will never give me the car again; he will
never forgive me; he will make me pay for repairs; it is going to be awkward
sitting close to him; he is going to remind me constantly of what has
happened..."
"Kevin,
what is wrong?"
"Oh..uh...hi,
mom."
"Why
are you talking to yourself?"
"Nothing
mom, nothing is wrong."
He
continues pacing up and down reciting what he will tell his father.
"My
son something is troubling you. Spit it out."
"Well...I...I
dented dad's car."
"So?"
"What
do you mean so? He won't be happy about it."
"Where
is it dented?"
"On
the bumper as I was parking. I must have miscalculated how large the car
was."
"Was
it an accident?"
"What
do you mean 'was it an accident'?"
"Did
you want it to happen?"
"No
I did not want it to happen."
"So
what is the problem?"
"I
dented dad's car and I don't know how he will react."
"You
know you amaze me. You just had a minor accident and here you are pacing and
sweating over a small dent."
"My
problem is not the dent, it is how dad will react."
"Well
I am sure if you explain it to him, he will understand."
"I
am not so sure about that."
"Listen,
my son, we are human beings. We are not perfect. We all make mistakes. You are
going to kill yourself with worry and dread. You are too young for that; live
your life. If an accident happens ask for forgiveness and move on. Nobody knows
when an accident will occur, and even if it does do not be scared. If you get
hit or hit someone on the road, that happens. Do not let anybody intimidate you
or scare you. If you have our car just call us and we will come and help sort
the matter. Remember this 'Respect people, do not fear them'. The only being
you are allowed to fear is God and no one else. Those people who intimidate or
try to scare you may also suffer from the same fate or even worse. Not that I
am praying for it. Just tell your dad what happened and say sorry. The worst he
can do is talk to you, take the car to the garage and give you the car tomorrow
to buy things from the supermarket. He will appreciate more the fact that you
were strong enough to go to him and tell him what happened. If you keep quiet
about it and he finds out, it will be harder for him to trust you. Are you listening
to me?"
"Yes
mom."
"OK,
now just relax and then go talk to him."
"OK
mom, thanks."
