Kevin
was coming home. It was 3 am in the morning. He had just been dropped off by
his friends and was staggering to the doorstep. He looked up and saw the lights
from the sitting room were on. He tried to wipe himself to look tidy, not like
someone who had just spent the better part of the day smoking and drinking.
After his futile attempts he gave up and decided he needed to sleep.
He
unlocked the door using his keys, entered and shut it. He removed his shoes and
tried to tiptoe to his room, but he knew it was futile.
"Halo
Kevin."
"Halo
Mom."
"Long
night I see?"
"Yes
mom, I enjoyed myself."
"That
is good my son, but I have a question to ask, or rather a favor."
"Not
again mom. For crying out loud it is 3 am in the morning. Can't we just talk
tomorrow?"
"No
we have to talk now."
"Come
on mom, I am extremely tired right now. Good night."
"KEVIN!
Come back here."
"Listen
mom, I am no longer a baby. Stop treating like one. I am grown and can do
whatever I like."
"Yes
you are grown. I cannot dispute that, but I am worried my son."
"Just
leave me alone mom."
"No,
I cannot leave you alone. You are my son. I care for you and your well
being."
"Well,
I am not like Claire. I am not as smart or sharp as her. I can never be
her."
"Who
said I want you to be like your sister?"
"Well,
it is just that you make me feel like I am the black sheep of the family. Why
don't you just leave me alone?"
"I
am sorry if you feel I love Claire more than you, but you are wrong. You are
both my children and I will care for you for the rest of my life. I don't want
to lose you. Every night you go out I cannot sleep because I think of the
dangers that you will face. I love you Kevin and I will always do my best to
protect you."
"Yeah,
right mom. Is that it? Can I go to sleep?"
His
mother gave him a darting look. He ignored it, but he knew she was not pleased.
He convinced himself it was her fault for not going to sleep. He was a big man
who could care for himself.
However,
for every night he stayed it would seem she was always waiting for him. And
every time she had words of encouragement to ask him to leave his 'party life',
but he would always shrug her off and go to sleep. Now he misses that. She was
the only one who cared about his life.
Here
he was. She was in front of him. Her coffin carrying her. She was made to smile
and was dressed in a white gown. Today he was going to rest a hero who was
always there for him. Now that she is gone he appreciates her grants, chants,
annoyance, lectures, and her concerns. She had kept her part of her bargain.
She risked her life to save his.
