Politicking

Dear politician,

It has been what, three years? 2013 to 2016 right? How time flies. I know next year is election time. Campaigns have gone in full swing. Development projects are arising. Roads are being built. The ‘trash’ situation is being handled finally. Children are receiving books and bursaries, finally. Politicians are camping at the enemies’ strongholds to gain an advantage in the next elections. New political parties are forming. Promises are coming up. Money is being thrown around. Youths are preparing to get paid to campaign or execute violent acts should ‘rigging’ occur because their favorite candidate lost the elections

People are crying we don’t want what happened in 2007-2008 after the results were announced. I do not want it either. I am waiting for you though. I want to listen to you ‘powerful manifesto’ and ‘miraculous promises’ that will be executed a year before the next elections. Thank you for working on them now though. At least there will be a period of ‘false calmness’ and civil rest, that is until the election results are announced.

I wonder which party you will be in, Mr. Politician. Will you come to me because you are where my people are? Will you come from the other side and try to convince me of your track record in the last year before elections? Will you tell me of the good thing you will do once I vote for you, which you could not do in the past three years? Will you tell me that the government worked against you and did not give you enough funds to carry out your earlier promises? Or is it political witch hunt (this term should be put in a dictionary for its repeated use) to damage your reputation so that I do not vote for you in the next elections? Will you steal votes to ensure you win? Will you run away while I am chased around for being the wrong tribe at the wrong place? Will you drink tea with the ‘enemy’ as you deliberate on creating another coalition government that will help increase the amount of tax I have to pay?

Please bring me you your ‘list of promises’, maybe you will execute it this time. Maybe. I hope that you win. If possible, do all your developments early; if there is any change remaining pocket it. I will hide my face to avoid seeing you ‘steal’.

Yours sincerely

Long Way from home

(Photo Source: Common dreams website) Jadim is a refugee. That is what the international organizations call her. The country hosting her is expected to feed her, protect her and make sure she is comfortable until her home country has some amount of peace. She gets ‘aid’ in terms of food, clothes, a blanket and a shelter. She has a right to get them. Moreover she is now pregnant, so she is feeding for two people. She sees people coming in and out, she heard they are called donors. Every time she sees the stream of vehicles she has to ensure her shelter is clean and she puts on a smile. They are the ones responsible for her stay there and they need to feel they are doing something. It also means extra rations that day, so of course she will put on her best smile. Jadim has lived in the camp for 2 years now.  Despite  all the niceties mentioned above, she constantly feels she was better at home, but since she lost her husband and two children to the war, she decid...

Unappreciated Hero

(Photo Source: www.wakatipuchurch.com/wp-content/uploads/Mother-waiting.gif) Kevin was coming home. It was 3 am in the morning. He had just been dropped off by his friends and was staggering to the doorstep. He looked up and saw the lights from the sitting room were on. He tried to wipe himself to look tidy, not like someone who had just spent the better part of the day smoking and drinking. After his futile attempts he gave up and decided he needed to sleep. He unlocked the door using his keys, entered and shut it. He removed his shoes and tried to tiptoe to his room, but he knew it was futile. "Halo Kevin." "Halo Mom." "Long night I see?" "Yes mom, I enjoyed myself." "That is good my son, but I have a question to ask, or rather a favor." "Not again mom. For crying out loud it is 3 am in the morning. Can't we just talk tomorrow?" "No we have to talk now." "Come...

Why an antagonist is important to a story

(Made on Canva) Who is an antagonist? An antagonist is the villain of a story. It can be a human being, a natural phenomenon like a hurricane, a disease, an animal, an idea or a fictional character like a dinosaur. The aim of the antagonist is to create chaos and wreak havoc while creating obstacles for the protagonist (hero). The protagonist has to find a solution to the uncomfortable situation caused by the antagonist. In story-telling, the antagonist propels the story forward by creating an inciting incident that forces the protagonist to go on a journey to remedy the situation and restore balance. In the Dark Knight (2008), the Joker creates chaotic situations in the city of Gotham with the aim of killing the Batman. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thanos is looking for rings that will give him ultimate power and make him the supreme being of the universe. Why are antagonists not popular? Being an antagonist is not very appealing, especially in the acting business b...
